2025 Ñustas

Tejido a mano en telar Jacquard computarizado/Handwoven on computer controlled Jacquard loom.

A series based on paintings from Cusco depicting the Virgin Mary as a young girl—dressed as an Inca *Ñusta* (princess) and spinning thread—images that blend Andean and Spanish cultures.

For pre-Columbian cultures, weaving was a fundamental part of the cultural universe—a language of knowledge and symbolic transmission. As the Spanish invaders advanced, they discovered that textile storehouses in various Inca settlements had been burned; the textiles were considered so vital that preventing them from falling into enemy hands was deemed a strategic necessity.

That is my gold: the fiber that holds the memory of the time before the looting. These are stories displaced by the colonial gaze, yet they endure across the centuries in the hands that weave and create knowledge rooted in exchange and resistance. They allow us to reclaim the concept of mutual nurturing. The thread cares for us as we care for it. The fiber teaches us to listen, to accompany, and to sustain the rhythm of another body. My girls discovers this treasure: a world where we can weave relationships that do not conquer, but rather nourish.
